GUN FREE SOUTH AFRICA, YOUNG MEN & WOMEN SPEAKING ABOUT VIOLENCE
Eighteen people are murdered with a gun every day in South Africa. It is almost hard to believe, but that is the reality about South Africa.
The 2009 National Injury Mortality Surveillance System shows that 90% of gun violence victims are men. While women are less likely to be victims of gun violence, firearms still play a significant role in violence against women, being used in intimate femicide (defined as the killing of a female person by an intimate partner), to rape, and to threaten and intimidate”
The problem becomes bigger when holding a gun is a young teenager. I have to admit that I was aware of the high level of violence in places like South Africa but when you hear shooting in the distance and they tell you that somebody got killed in front of the big shopping mall few km away from the project you are about to visit, well that is another story. It changes everything.
CHILDREN’S RADIO : LET’S YOUNG PEOPLE RAISE AWARENESS ABOUT VIOLENCE
One of the project I visited this week, aims to raise awareness among young people around issues of violence with a particular focus on gun violence, which is very common in South Africa. Thanks to this initiative, many young women and men have the opportunity to have a voice about issues such as violence but also HIV, AIDS, teen pregnancies, human rights and community safety.
I spoke with few of them and had the amazing opportunity to see the show live (it is on every Saturday from 10am -11am). It was really inspiring and just beautiful to see many motivated teenagers, wanting to change things around. Some of them, admitted that they feel it is their right and their responsibility to speak up about these issues.

SDG : SUSTAINABILITY DEVELOPMENT GOALS and GOAL 16
For those who might not know, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), known as the Global Goals, are a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity.
There are 17 Goals in total and in this particular case, I have noticed an evident link between the project and the Goal number 16 which is about PEACE, JUSTICE & STRONG INSTITUTIONS.
Unfortunately high levels of armed violence and insecurity here in South Africa have been having a destructive impact on the country’s development, affecting the safety of the citizens as well as it economic growth.
The SDG number 16, aims to significantly reduce all forms of violence, and work with governments and communities to find lasting solutions to conflict and insecurity. Strengthening the rule of law and promoting human rights is key to this process, as is reducing the flow of illicit arms and strengthening the participation of developing countries in the institutions of global governance.
I made a video about this project so you are more than welcome to check it out! And please, if you have any question or anything that you would like to share don’t hesitate and leave a comment!
